Criminal Justice alumna, Louise Owens (’80), dedicated to helping others at work and home

Louise Owens ’80 with her two grandchildren.

Louise Owens (‘80) always wanted to be two things: a police officer and a mother. Although she had been interested in criminal justice since kindergarten, she never imagined herself going to college. The annual Portage Health Foundation Scholarship opportunity for Finlandia University students studying healthcare and coming from Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon counties is now accepting applications.

Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen Named 2019 Recipient of Board of Trustees Distinguished Faculty Award

Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen was honored as the Board of Trustees Distinguished Faculty Award recipient at the 2019 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 5.

Dr. Virtanen, an assistant professor of Finnish & Nordic Studies, joined Finlandia’s Suomi College of Arts and Sciences in 2014. She teaches 12 courses including Cultural Anthropology, Finnish Language, Gender in Nordic Society and the Kalevala. She also chairs the Institutional Review Board.

Finlandia University Gallery in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock announces its return to spring/summer hours.  Beginning May 9th, the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
