Finlandia University launches online mental health counseling service for students through META Teletherapy

META Student Teletherapy provides students with confidential and easy access to a marketplace of mental wellness providers. Finlandia University, a long-standing liberal arts college in northern Michigan, has become the latest institution of higher learning to offer META Teletherapy to students.

Parade of Nations updates route for 2021

The annual Parade of Nations will take place this Saturday, September 18, starting at 11 a.m. at the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, across from the miner’s statue in Houghton. The Parade will head down the hill to Lakeshore Drive, past Dee Stadium and follow Lakeshore Drive past Bridgeview Park, ending at Kestner Park. It will not go through downtown Houghton this year.

Growth at Finlandia, largest incoming class in five years

This fall, Finlandia University’s overall enrollment grew by six percent with the on-campus student population increasing by nine percent. This full-time-equivalent growth brought 25 more students to campus than in fall 2020, giving Finlandia an enrollment of 430. The fall 2021 incoming class is the largest since 2016 with Finlandia’s International School of Business realizing an all-time high of 137 degree-seeking majors. Finlandia announces 125th Anniversary celebrations

HANCOCK, MI – On September 8, 1896, hardy and hard-working Finnish Lutheran immigrants gathered to worship at the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hancock, Michigan to officially dedicate a school in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula: the Suomi College and Theological Seminary. J.K. Nikander, president of the Suomi Synod and the college’s first president, preached from the book of Proverbs 8:1, “Does not wisdom cry out, and does not understanding lift up her voice?”

Parade of Nations announced for Sept. 18

Hello!

Michigan Technological University and Finlandia University invite you to join us in celebrating the 32nd annual Parade of Nations, on September 18, 2021. Come celebrate the cultural diversity of the Keweenaw region!

The parade will start at 11:00 am. Due to the ongoing construction in town, the parade route will be different this year. It will start at Franklin Square in Houghton, go through downtown, and finish at Kestner Park.

TRIO Talent Search Program at Finlandia University awarded grant to help low income, potential first generation students access higher education

TRIO Talent Search will be provided five years of funding to help a minimum of 729 students from 15 schools in the Western Upper Peninsula find their path to college.

Finlandia hires new PTA Program Director

Finlandia University has recently hired Melanie Thurmond as its College of Health Sciences Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program Director and Assistant Instructor.

Thurmond (’06) attained an associate’s degree from Finlandia’s PTA program and a bachelor’s degree from DeVry University in Finance. In addition, Thurmond holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Findlay, an opportunity provided by Finlandia’s graduate pathway toward the DPT program. Michigan TRIO Professional Organization Celebrates 50 years

Finlandia University TRIO Pre-College and Student Support Services staff recently participated in the Michigan College Access Programs and Personnel Annual Professional Conference spanning two full days and delivered in a virtual format on May 17 and 18, 2021. The 50th anniversary of the state TRIO organization makes it one of the first state TRIO chapters in the country to charter a formal chapter.
