Sophomore art students get soupy on Finlandia Fridays

January 25, 2019

Art students Emma Mackey and Blue Kenwood dropped by Finlandia Fridays this week. Both Mackey and Kenwood are sophomores in the International School of Art and Design, and members of the Young Women’s Caucus of Art (YWCA).

Mackey is a local who is attending FinnU with the assistance of the Hancock Award and is studying graphic design. “At first I was doing the joint degree of marketing and graphic design, but I kind of fell in love with the graphic design more so I decided to focus on that,” stated Mackey. Mackey mentioned that graphics design professor Tom Adolphs is a great teacher and someone she enjoys working with. Outside of studying graphics, Mackey is the president of the YWCA, a group that helps raise awareness to the arts and those working in the arts.

Kenwood hails from Milwaukee, and is studying intermedia.  Kenwood discovered Finlandia with the assistance of her mother, who wanted to find a school relating to her Finnish heritage. After visiting another art school and FinnU, Kenwood preferred FinnU, ultimately deciding to come to Hancock. Active in campus groups, Kenwood is a member of the caucus, as well as the president of Lion’s Pride, an LGBTQ club that is new to campus this year. “It is a group of LGBTQ people and allies, who come together once every few weeks to discuss events that are happening politically in LGBTQ rights, in our own lives, or how we can expand the knowledge of our group and the community in general to make people more aware and excepting,” said Kenwood.

Hosting a fundraiser on February 2 at the Finnish American Heritage Center, the Young Women’s Caucus for Art will be having a soup and art auction. According to Mackey, people can come in and have as much, or as little, soup that they want. Along with soup, there will be desserts and art from the community and members of the caucus. Tickets can be purchased from a caucus member or through advisors Dylan Weiler and Phyllis Fredendall. For more information on the event, check out the Facebook event.
