When Small Really is Beautiful

May 7, 2018

Small is Beautiful at FinlandiaWhen you hear a sentiment echoed across levels, across leadership and across campus, you start to pay attention. At Finlandia, we are hearing the echoing voice of Joshua Kim saying, “2018 will be the year that small is beautiful in higher ed.”

But what we are missing from this article is that the portion about small schools, highlights their resilience. If there’s one thing that FinnU has… it’s sisu.

We pride ourselves on the relationships that the Faculty and Staff get to build with our students. Every moment and milestone is celebrated with full hearts by all.

“…the world’s best education can be had at a small college.  Higher education is expensive. Why not get the most value for the money,” continues King.  “This means finding a school where classes are small, and the professors are able to build relationship with the students.”

“You get to build those relationships with people at Finlandia, the ones that last,” said Melissa Helppi, the 2018 Student Representative.

While it’s true that our student to teacher ratio is fantastic, 1:11, it isn’t the only thing that makes small beautiful at Finlandia. Our student population is diverse, involved and engaged. These students understand what it means to be a part of this community.

Anyone knows it takes a special kind of person to fall in love with all that the U.P. and Finlandia has to offer, but in our learning community, you don’t have to be Finnish to understand sisu.

This article is the kick off for the Small is Beautiful campaign here at Finlandia University. Stay tuned for a series of great content showcasing just how beautiful small really is on our campus.
