Bridget Durocher runs through Finlandia fitness

Finlandia Fridays gets fit this week with Bridget Durocher, Finlandia’s cross country coach, senior women administrator in athletics, and strength and conditioning center coordinator.

Durocher joined Finlandia University nearly one year ago and has never looked back. “It’s phenomenal, it is a place of opportunity where if you put forth the effort, you are going to be given ample opportunities,” said Durocher. Finnish TV personality Antti Holma was looking to produce a show about Finnish-American culture, and he knew exactly where to go.

Travel Channel visits Keweenaw for Finnish cuisine

In the most recent episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, which premiered March 7, the Travel Channel show’s host visited several featured locations around the Keweenaw, sampling the signature cuisine of the area.

“The nineteenth-century copper boom led Michigan mining companies to recruit cheap Finnish laborers,” explained Zimmern in the “Great Lakes” episode of Bizarre Foods. “The new immigrants settled in Hancock, and to this day, it remains an epicenter for Finnish businesses and Finlandia University.”

Kurtti highlighted on Embassy of Finland website

Finlandia University’s own Jim Kurtti was featured this week on the Embassy of Finland’s website for his work to promote Finnish American culture.

Here in Hancock – a place the early Finns called, “Ameriikan Lappi” – the Honorary Consul office is located on the campus of Finlandia University in the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Finlandia announces second year of Summer Bridge Program

The Summer Bridge Program at Finlandia University will kick off on June 26 for its second year – allowing students to get ahead and better prepare themselves for college.

Save the date: Blood drive on campus on April 10

The Finlandia University Student Nurses Association is hosting a blood drive on Monday, April 10 from 12 to 4 p.m. in Finlandia Hall. The blood drive is being held in association with the U.P. Regional Blood Center. Additional information will be made available as the event nears.
