Finlandia Fridays talks new student health clinic

This week’s Finlandia Fridays featured Assistant Professor of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner, Cindy Blake, as she discussed the new student health clinic, which officially opened this semester. Finlandia partnered with Upper Great Lakes Health to open the on-campus clinic, located in Nikander 14A. It will be open Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm and provide same-day in-person and tele-health appointments.

“This is a unique clinic because it offers many services that you would receive at an urgent care, plus many services that are available through family practice,” said Blake. 

Due to COVID-19 precautions, appointments must be made in advance, however, Blake said same-day appointments are available. Students, faculty and staff can make appointments online or by calling 906-483-1060. Most insurance will also be accepted, and a sliding fee scale is available for those without insurance. 

In addition to providing services, the clinic will provide a unique learning experience to nursing students, who will assist Blake in the clinic.

“I’m really excited about the telemedicine or tele-presentation they’ll be exposed to,” said Blake, who plans on working with all junior and senior nursing students. “Telemedicine has been around for a long time, however with COVID, it’s escalated and here to stay. It’s a unique experience because a lot of students don’t get the chance to tele-present and this is something they can put on their resume when they graduate.”
