Finlandia Alumni Board to host second Giving Day for student textbooks on March 18

March 5, 2020

The Finlandia Alumni Board is hosting their second Giving Day on March 18, 2020. The day is dedicated to raising money to help students pay for textbooks. Last year, the FAB helped 39 students with their textbooks, raising almost $10,000. Their goal this year is to raise enough money to help 50 students. Finlandia Giving Day

What a delight it was to encourage students with something tangible,” said FAB President Monica Hill (’76) of the 2019 Giving Day. “We remember with fondness our days at Suomi/ Finlandia. We made friends for life.  We stuffed our heads full of knowledge. We tried, failed, tried again. Giving Textbook Awards was an intentional way to let the students know that the Alumni Board supports them in their education, knowing for so many of them that the cost of college can be formidable.”

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics states that textbook prices have increased over 1000% within a 30 year span. Sources suggest that students should consider budgeting between $1200- $1400 towards textbooks.

By addressing this need for textbooks, Hill mentioned that the overall results of Giving Day 2019 were humbling.

I came away from each call (to a recipient) confident that Finlandia is providing an excellent education and the students are engaged in learning and applying what they have learned,” said Hill.

Donations will be accepted through the Finlandia website and Facebook page on March 18. Donors can also call the Finlandia Advancement Office to donate, or make a check payable to Finlandia University.
