February 17, 2023

2022 Honors & Awards Banquet

The Honors and Awards Banquet is upon us, and all faculty and staff are invited to nominate deserving students for scholarships and awards. The event is dependent upon faculty and staff nominations, so please take a few minutes to nominate students you believe to be good candidates by March 13, 2023. Below is information on all six scholarships and a link to the submission form.

DAVID LAUREN JOKELA ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Preference in awarding this scholarship is given to applicants of Finnish background from the Calumet area, although students from the four-county region (Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, and Ontonagon) will be eligible. The scholarship is awarded to a student in good academic standing who will be returning to Finlandia the next academic year. A primary criterion to be used in selecting a recipient of this scholarship will be his or her financial need. In addition, consideration should be given to the student’s service to others, caring attitude and sisu. A student may receive this scholarship only once.

KENNETH AND LOIS SEATON SCHOLARSHIP

The recipient of this award will be a continuing Finlandia junior or senior Copper Country resident, preferably female, who is in a Baccalaureate Degree program and demonstrates high personal and scholastic standards.

PHILIP AND LORET RUPPE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

This award comes as a result of a gift from the Ruppe family to commemorate the service of former Congressman Phil Ruppe, a Houghton native, and his late wife, Loret Ruppe, who served as head of the Peace Corps and as Ambassador to Norway. The scholarship is awarded to two students (one male, one female) who are continuing students at Finlandia for their outstanding volunteer efforts and service to the college campus and the local community.

Philip and René Johnson Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2022 in honor of Philip Johnson’s years of service as Finlandia’s president from 2007 to 2022. At its core, the Scholarship aims to support Finlandia’s academic vision: To advance expansive learning that best prepares graduates for the 21st-century workplace and world. The Scholarship also aims to support Finlandia’s commitment to provide an affordable private higher education experience for families in the Upper Peninsula.

This scholarship is a renewable, sophomore-level scholarship and will be awarded to an Upper Peninsula high school graduate (or has earned a similarly recognized secondary school credential); who will have earned sophomore status of study at Finlandia with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be in good standing; and will have declared a major in a course of study delivered by the Suomi College of Arts and Sciences.

SISU AWARD

Awarded to graduating students who have shown courage, fortitude, and perseverance to overcome hardship and achieve academic and personal success.

SAMPO SOCIETY

Membership in the Sampo Society is awarded to graduating students whose academic success is highest and most well-rounded. Recipients must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.7-4.0 and will have shown leadership, commitment, achievement, initiative, and involvement in the cultural and intellectual life of campus and community.
