Finlandia is excited to welcome its new incoming students to the Finlandia First Year Experience!
“The Finlandia First Year Experience aims to foster preparedness, confidence, and a sense of belonging among our first-year students and other newcomers,” Director of Career Services, Emma Dorst, said. The program is designed to promote community cohesion by combining moments of playfulness, acts of service, and opportunities for reflection. We hope students come away from the First Year Experience with a solid appreciation for the unique contribution they make to our campus and an eager anticipation for the years ahead.”
The First Year Experience (or FYE) program is delivered in three sections:
Pre-Arrival Orientation is a series of short virtual sessions introducing students to the systems and platforms that will help them achieve personal and academic success at Finlandia. Students can follow these sessions at their own pace, but they need to be completed prior to Friday, August 20th.
On-Campus Orientation is a series of in-person events and activities that will introduce students to the Finlandia campus and community. Each new student will be assigned to an orientation group or “flock”, named after a bird species that is present in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Each flock will have a different orientation schedule, which will be provided to students after they arrive on campus.
Sisu Seminar is a fall semester course for all incoming Finlandia students. Students will be registered for this course by their academic advisor. For the Sisu Seminar, students will remain with the “flock” they were assigned to during On-Campus Orientation. Students will be able to review their schedule and explore the Sisu Seminar course structure on Canvas before classes begin.
