Introducing FinnU’s New Esports Director, Thomas Goodman

March 20, 2020

On this episode of Finlandia Fridays, host Olivia Myers is joined by Thomas Goodman who was recently hired as the director for the new Esports program, which begins Fall 2020. The pair discusses everything from students to recruits and what you need to know about the team and upcoming season.

Esports is growing rapidly at the collegiate level and has been linked with improved memory, concentration, and analytical development. With this program, FinnU can reach a new group of students, who might not have thought a smaller university was right for them.

Goodman plans to involve more than just his athletes in this program. “We are going to really work on the academic side linked with the Esports,” said Goodman. “So we are going to have people that not only play the games but support students that work on the website and video production for us.

I want to have a large program with a lot of games, so we are offering nine different games. We have a big net to throw over students, so we should be able to fulfill all the rolls and have students come from lots of different backgrounds. The best thing about Esports is the sky is the limit with the number of people, so if hundreds of people are interested we can upgrade and go from there.”

The team is looking to fill a 20 person, co-ed roster.  They will be housed on main campus and competing every night. Players will have the option to play one or multiple games. This upcoming season players have the option to play League of Legends, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Fortnite, FIFA, Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, Madden 20 and Call of Duty.

Although the Esports program is a varsity sport, it is not sanctioned by the NCAA, so scholarships are available for players.

More information about the Esports program can be found here.
