Embrace Your Sisu Winners Announced

March 25, 2021

Finlandia University is excited to announce the winners of the Embrace Your Sisu Scholarship competition. 14 participants submitted their finished lion coloring page and two winners were selected. The People’s Choice Winner with 2,552 votes was Emily Nelson from Ishpeming, MI, who will be entering Finlandia in the fall of 2021.

Winning the Critic’s Choice Scholarship is Sullivan Whalen, from Auburn, MI who plans to study Graphic Design and is also an incoming freshman for the fall 2021 semester.

“The way that Sullivan addressed the predetermined shapes, using color, tint, and shade to accept or deny the preexisting lines, was unique,” said Dean of the International School of Art & Design Denise Vandeville, who led the committee that reviewed all entries for the Critic’s Choice Award. “And since color is not subjective and always has a psychological effect on the viewer, Sullivan was very successful in using color to serve multiple purposes, other than just describing.”

Both Nelson and Whalen will receive a $1000 scholarship from Finlandia once they begin classes in the fall. The remaining entries were entered into a raffle for a Sisu Swag bag. Five winners were selected: Rachael Kostick, Elizabeth Mukka, Susan Geliche, Ashlee Kranz, and Shaylyn Spencer.

“I was very pleased with the level of interest we received,” said Gini Gesler, enrollment officer and coordinator of ISAD who came up with the idea for the competition. “It was exciting and uplifting to be a part of such a fun and inspirational project.”
