Dr. Jeffrey Pettibone Welcomed as New Psychology Professor

September 23, 2019

Finlandia University is pleased to welcome Dr. Jeffrey Pettibone as Assistant Professor of Psychology. Pettibone is joining FinnU after spending time as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California.

“I was very impressed when I came to Finlandia,” said Dr. Pettibone. “There is an intentional care that goes into the quality of teaching here. These were some of the first times that I talked to people who had a primary interest in teaching. It was exciting to see a strong emphasis placed on pedagogy and educational outcomes at the level of individual faculty.”

Pettibone received his Doctorate in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan where he also earned his Bachelors of Science in Biopsychology and Cognitive Science. It was during this time that Pettibone found he had a passion for teaching and inspiring students with discussions of interesting topics.

“With a small classroom size you get a better human connection,” said Dr. Pettibone. “Having a conversational approach with fewer students in the room, you are able to build and tailor the lessons to the students so they are getting the most out of each class. I appreciate that I can work more closely with each student to help them with academic growth and also with navigating long-term career goals.”

Having made the move from San Francisco to Hancock Dr. Pettibone noted that the culture here is much different from where he was coming from and that is something he is excited about. Dean if Suomi College of Arts & Sciences, Jason Oyadomari shares in that excitement.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Pettibone to our community,” said Oyadomari. “He brings rigorous scholarship that will advance student’s scientific inquiry.”
