Finlandia appoints new FAHC director

HANCOCK — For more than 20 years, David Maki served as the “right-hand man” at the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC). Now, he’ll have both hands on the steering wheel, as he takes over leadership of Finlandia University’s most well-established expression of its Finnish roots.

Bridge Feature: Hirvonen Hall provides new Esports arena

Instructional renovations at Hirvonen Hall have provided Finlandia’s Esports program with a new state-of-the-art arena. With well over 20 active players, the new space includes 14 top-of-the-line personal computers, 4k TVs, numerous consoles, a VR machine and a green screen streaming studio. Opening their doors for Finlandia students, their family and friends to enjoy the new equipment, Esports hosts open houses on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to midnight and Sundays 1 to 7 p.m.

MLK Day of Service postponed

MLK Day of Service at Finlandia University is a day to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. through community service and volunteering. This year, out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19, MLK Day activities originally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 have been postponed. Martin Luther King Day will still be a day of observance and classes will be suspended for the day.

In 1916, a Finnish immigrant to North America, Frank Aaltonen, visited Sugar Island, Michigan, and was highly impressed by the opportunities the island presented. The island was the traditional home of the Anishinaabeg, but by the early 20th century, its population was a mixture of several ethnicities. Finlandia Board of Trustees names Presidential Search Committee, national executive search firm

The Finlandia University Board of Trustees has made significant advancements in the search for Finlandia’s next president, announcing the establishment of the Presidential Search Committee and selection of a national executive search firm. The search follows the October announcement of current Finlandia President Philip Johnson, who is to step down after the 2021-22 academic year.

31st Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition Virtual Reception | Finlandia University Gallery

On Thursday, December 9, 2021, the Finlandia University Gallery held a virtual reception of the 31st Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition featuring the artwork of Natalie Salminen Rude. The exhibit is open to the public until Feb. 4.

Earlier this year, Finlandia University was the proud recipient of a collection of artwork by the preeminent Finnish American artist Gerald Matthew Immonen (1936-2011).
