Finlandia ScholarshipsThank you for your interest in scholarships available to Finlandia University students.

Scholarship opportunities from Finlandia that would require an application and that would be in addition to the funding a full-time student would receive for their cumulative Finlandia GPA (or incoming GPA for new students) will be posted here as they become available. 

Entrance Scholarships

Qualifying students will receive one of the following scholarships.

Board of Trustee Scholarship  – $7,500

ACT score of 25 or SAT score of 1200 AND high school cumulative GPA of 3.5. Renewable by maintaining a GPA of 3.25 at Finlandia University.

President Scholarship  – $5,500

ACT score of 22 or SAT score of 1100 AND high school cumulative GPA of 3.25. Renewable by maintaining a GPA of 3.00 at Finlandia University.

Dean Scholarship – $3,500

High school cumulative GPA of 3.0. Renewable by maintaining a GPA of 2.75 at Finlandia University.

Faculty Scholarship  – $3,500

Earned at least 18 college credits AND college cumulative GPA of 3.0. Renewable by maintaining a GPA of 2.75 at Finlandia University.

 

Institutional Scholarships

These unique scholarship opportunities make a high quality education in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula even more affordable.

U.P. Commitment Grant  – $4,000

NEW for Fall 2017: All new incoming students who graduated from a U.P. high school with at least a 2.5 grade point average are eligible for this. 

Service Scholarship  – $2,000

NEW for Fall 2017: Core to Finlandia’s mission is the idea of service. This is open to new, incoming non-Upper Peninsula residents with at least a 2.5 grade point average. 

Ambassador Scholarship  – $1,500

Based on academic record, on-campus housing, limited to one student per state.

Family Scholarship  – $1,000 per student

At least two family members enrolled full-time from one family.

Church Matching Scholarship  – up to $1,000

Matches up to $1,000 pledged by a church.

Legacy Scholarship  – $500

Available to students whose parent, grandparent or sibling graduated from Finlandia University.

All entrance and institutional scholarships and grants require full-time enrollment. Scholarship criteria subject to change without notice. Scholarship programs are subject to change due to financial constraints.

U.P. Commitment Grant Details

We’re proud to call the Upper Peninsula of Michigan home, and have a passion for welcoming our fellow Yoopers to campus, which is why we’re introducing the $4,000 U.P. Commitment Grant. To be eligible, students need to have earned at least a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA, have graduated from a U.P. high school and be a new incoming student for the fall 2017 semester. Students will be able to retain this for all four years by maintaining a 2.5 GPA, full-time status and good social standing.

To earn this grant, students simply need to talk with their Finlandia University admissions officer. The grant will be paid out $2,000 per semester for up to eight semesters. Students earning the Hancock Award are not eligible to receive this grant. This grant is only available to new incoming students during the fall 2017 semester. Other stipulations may apply, please contact our financial aid staff with any questions.

Service Scholarship Details

Finlandia University is a learning community dedicated to academic excellence, spiritual growth and service. To showcase this, Finlandia University is offering incoming students in the fall of 2017 the opportunity to earn a $2,000 scholarship for performing community service. To be eligible, students need to have earned at least a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA, and have a letter of recommendation from the organization or group where the service was performed. The scholarship will be renewable each semester for four years by maintaining a 2.5 GPA, maintaining full-time status, keeping good social standing and volunteering at least eight hours per semester.

To earn this scholarship, students need to submit a letter of recommendation proving community service to their admissions officer. The scholarship will be paid out $1,000 per semester for up to eight semesters. Students earning the U.P. Commitment Grant or Hancock Award are not eligible to receive this scholarship. This scholarship is only available to new incoming students during the fall 2017 semester. Other stipulations may apply, please contact our financial aid staff with any questions.

2017-18 Servant Leadership House

The Servant Leadership House is a unique living and learning community for female students who are committed to personal growth and servant leadership as a means of building a vibrant and caring community. The Servant Leadership House core commitments accompany students in personal reflection and action that is relationship-driven, holistic and transformative. This scholarship is open to female students of sophomore standing who meet the GPA requirements. Learn more about the scholarship on the January 31 announcement. Applications are due by March 1.

CCSA Storyteller Scholarship 2017

The CCSA Storyteller Scholarship encourages student participation in CCSA programs by offering a means for students to tell their own CCSA stories. The awardee is expected to provide CCSA quality writing and/or imagery. The deliverable product must be appropriate for the CCSA web site, although the student may propose alternative formats such as a blog or a YouTube© project. The scholarship deadline is February 24, 2017.

To compete for this scholarship you must have a completed admission application on file and be accepted to Finlandia University by April 21, 2017. This application is for entry to the scholarship competition only. The winner will be announced following Portfolio Review Day on Saturday, May 6, 2017, and must be present to win. Learn more on the January 31 announcement or the Finlandia Fridays episode announcing the scholarship. Virginia Fund Scholarship 2017

Freshman women at Finlandia University have a unique opportunity to receive a scholarship that can be used during the 2017-18 academic year in the Virginia Fund Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement and contribution to campus life. Applications will be reviewed by the Academic Achievement Committee. Students of all majors are invited to apply. Along with the basic form, students will need to write a letter to the Academic Achievement Committee outlining their accomplishments, memberships in organizations, volunteer service, extra-curricular activities, etc. during their first semester and change at the university. Letters should be under 500 words in length. Applications are due by March 10.

Preference in awarding this scholarship is given to applicants of Finnish background from the Calumet area, although students from the four-county region (Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, and Ontonagon) will be eligible. The scholarship is awarded to a student in good academic standing who will be returning to Finlandia the next academic year. A primary criterion to be used in selecting a recipient of this scholarship will be his or her financial need. In addition, consideration should be given to the student’s service to others, caring attitude and sisu. A student may receive this scholarship only once.

In order to be awarded this scholarship a student will need to be nominated by one of their professors.

Kenneth and Lois Seaton Scholarship

The recipient of this award will be a continuing Finlandia junior or senior Copper Country resident, preferably female, who is in a Baccalaureate Degree program and demonstrates high personal and scholastic standards.

Philip and Loret Ruppe Community Service Award

This award comes as a result of a gift from the Ruppe family to commemorate the service of former Congressman Phil Ruppe, a Houghton native, and his late wife, Loret Ruppe, who served as head of the Peace Corps and as Ambassador to Norway. The scholarship is awarded to two students (one male, one female) who are continuing students at Finlandia for their outstanding volunteer efforts and service to the college campus and the local community.

In order to be awarded this scholarship a student will need to be nominated by one of their professors.

Sampo Society

Membership in the Sampo Society is awarded to graduating students whose academic success is highest and most well-rounded. Recipients must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75-4.0 and will have shown leadership, commitment, achievement, initiative, and involvement in the cultural and intellectual life of campus and community.

Portage Health Foundation Scholarship
The Portage Health Foundation is a non-profit charitable foundation serving Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Through health-oriented scholarships, the Foundation is eager to support more opportunities for students from the western U.P. to study the health sciences. Additionally, the Foundation hopes that someday those students will remain in or return to the Upper Peninsula as professionals and become partners in creating a healthier community. RN-BSN Scholarship
The College of Health Sciences at Finlandia University has three $3,000-per-year scholarships available for incoming students in the RN-BSN program. These scholarships are available immediately. (Please note: This scholarship is full, check back often to see the next time we post it!)

FinnStyle Scholarship
Behind every product available at FinnStyle is a brilliant designer. Whether they’re established or up-and-coming, FinnStyle is always keen on backing designers of all types. In the summer of 2014, FinnStyle decided to take the level of support to another level by partnering with the International School of Art and Design at Finlandia University to establish the FinnStyle Scholarship program for young designers. FinnStyle is proud to offer a $1,000 scholarship every school year to one deserving first-year or second-year student to help them achieve their creative aspirations. MA Scholarship
The College of Health Sciences at Finlandia University has one $5,000 scholarships available for incoming students in the certified medical assistant program. This scholarship is available immediately. (Now closed, application deadline was June 26, 2015. Check back often to see if it is reposted).

Brule Scholarship Competition for Art Transfer Students
The Dave and Elsa Brule Transfer Scholarship Competition, which will award $5,000, recognizes student talent and achievement. The competition is open to all college students who are transferring from another university. All media is welcome, including but not limited to illustration, studio arts, ceramics, fashion and fiber, graphic design, digital art and integrated design. The work will be evaluated on composition, concept, range, craftsmanship, and originality. Please note: The scholarship is available only to transfer students. Awards are distributed based on full-time enrollment (12 or more credits per semester). The scholarship begins in the academic year 2015-2016 and is non-renewable. An application for admissions must be submitted by April 24. (Now closed, application deadline was May 8, 2015).
