Winter Welcome to kick off spring semester at FinnU

The spring semester at Finlandia University will start with a 10-day slate of on-campus events that includes a welcoming feast, film showings, worship services, NCAA Division III hockey and the university’s annual MLK Day of Service.

“This is going to be a wonderful way to start our semester,” said Fredi de Yampert, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. “There’s a little bit of something for everyone during our Winter Welcome event.”

All events are free for students.    

Winter Welcome 2017 Event Schedule

  • Saturday, January 7, 7:15 p.m. – Women’s Hockey vs. UW-Superior at Houghton County Arena
  • Sunday, January 8, 1 p.m. – Women’s Hockey vs. UW-Superior at Calumet Colosseum
  • Sunday, January 8, 9 p.m. – Semester Opening Worship at Chapel of St. Matthew
  • Monday, January 9, 4:30-7 p.m. – Welcoming Feast at Finlandia Hall – free for all students, their families, and Finlandia staff and faculty. Event to feature spaghetti, garlic bread and salad.
  • Tuesday, January 10, 12:30 p.m. – Second Tuesday Recital Series at Chapel of St. Matthew
  • Wednesday, January 11, 6:30 p.m. – Sledding at Quincy Greens (sleds, hot cocoa and brownies provided!)
  • Thursday, January 12, 2 and 6 p.m. – Nordic Film Series at Finnish American Heritage Center featuring Tuntematon emäntä
  • Friday, January 13, 7:15 p.m. – Men’s Hockey vs. St. Norbert College at Houghton County Arena
  • Saturday, January 14, 4 p.m. – Men’s Hockey vs. St. Norbert College at Houghton County Arena
  • Sunday, January 15, 8 p.m. – Sunday Night Worship to begin MLK Day of Service Activities
  • Monday, January 16 – No classes for annual MLK Day of Service
  • Monday, January 16, 10 a.m. – MLK Day Speaker at Finnish American Heritage Center
  • Monday, January 16, 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. – MLK Day Brunch at Finlandia Hall – open to all students, faculty and staff participating in MLK Day of Service
  • Monday, January 16, 1-6 p.m. – MLK Day volunteering at various sites
  • Monday, January 16, 7 p.m. – MLK Day Featured Film, Selma, at Wargelin 303
