February Nordic Film Series screening explores Sami heritage

January 31, 2018

The February showing of the Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) will feature “Suddenly Sami,” a documentary that follows the director’s personal quest to discover her Sami heritage.

In honor of International Sami Day, the FAHC will host a pair of screenings of “Suddenly Sami” at 2 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 8. “Suddenly Sami” is a 52-minute film that follows director Ellen-Astri Lundby as she explores her ethnic roots. During her childhood and youth in Oslo, Norway, her mother never told her about her indigenous Sami background. Why didn’t she? And how can the director suddenly become Sami in the middle of life? And does she really want to?

The film is in English, and is subtitled when Sami language is spoken. The screenings are open to the public; donations are appreciated.

For more information about this screening, call (906) 487-7549. A preview of the movie is available below.
