Nordic Film Series wraps season with Norwegian movie

April 12, 2016

A Norwegian movie based on a famous novel concludes the 2015-16 season for the Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC).

“Victoria” will show at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 in the Martha Wiljanen Community Hall of the FAHC.

This 2013 film is a dramatization of Knut Hamsun’s 1898 novel of the same name, tells the story of the tragic and unhappy love affair between Victoria and Johannes. She’s a daughter of a rich estate owner, and he is the son of the poor miller. Despite the deep love between them, her father makes Victoria ditch Johannes, and instead marry the chamber man’s son Otto. The film follows them for years, where we see Johannes making every possible attempt to impress her, and to climb in social rank.

The Nordic Film Series selected a Norwegian film for this showing, as it is the show date nearest to Norway’s Constitution Day, which is observed in May.

“Victoria” is 1 hour and 45 minutes long, and is in Norwegian with English subtitles. The showings are open to the public; donations are appreciated. For more information, call (906) 487-7347.
