Finlandia University has made a $12,500 donation to Portage Lake Multi-Educational Services, Inc. (PLM-ES) to assist with several major improvements to Houghton County Arena.

“We’ve been here 17 years, and to see these kinds of improvements being done is great,” Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg said. “This is our home rink, and it’s nice to be able to pitch in.”

Improvements to the arena this summer include a new roof, a new dehumidifier, new bleachers, improvements to the core of the building’s structure and organizers are still hoping to also install a new ice plant, which might be a summer 2018 project. PLM-ES is a non-profit organization that is organizing the fundraising efforts.

“We’ve raised about $400,000, and we’re still trying to get another $100,000,” said Dave Hermanson, president governing board for the PLM-ES. “This is a tremendous donation. It shows the confidence Finlandia has in this. We need them here as a customer, and we know they want to see a first-class facility as well.”

The arena is located in Hancock and has been home to Finlandia University since men’s hockey was started in 2000 and women’s hockey in 2004. The facility is owned and operated by Houghton County, which is taking care of financing for most of the structural updates to the arena. Learn more about the arena at houghtoncountyarena.com.
