Erin Barnett and the Summer Bridge Program
March 3, 2017Interested in experiencing college a bit earlier than the norm? The Finlandia Summer Bridge Program is for you.
This week Finlandia Fridays speaks with Director of Academic Success and Student Life, Erin Barnett as they dive into the Summer Bridge Program offered here at Finlandia University. The Sumer Bridge Program allows you to earn up to six credits before the fall semester starts. “Taking these classes early gives you a strong foundation heading into the fall semester,” said Barnett.
This program is focused on education and communication but also entails some extracurricular activities. The program offers a rafting trip in Iron Mountain, Michigan and even the possibility of a biking trip to explore the Keweenaw. These activities allow the students to become more acquainted with the community but also build lasting friendships among each other.
“The students that participate in this program really find it beneficial. They hang out together, they have fun together and they really build a community among themselves,” said Barnett.
The Summer Bridge Program is a seven-week long curriculum in efforts to prepare incoming students so they are successful in their first semester of college and the ability to get ahead right out of the gates. “Six credits is a lot for a program to offer. These credits, for a discount, go far for you in your collegiate career,” Barnett said. “Getting ahead of the game can also lighten the workload for the student in the future. With some added courses they may be able to graduate a semester early.”
Spending the summer in the Upper Peninsula also has its perks. When the sun is shining it is one of the most beautiful places in the country and comes with a plethora of things to do. Often students go exploring, via biking, hiking and even kayaking. The program does not have classes on Friday, so many local students may travel home if they wish or spend more time out and about with their friends while exploring what the Keweenaw has to offer.
