Business students competing in THE Project 2015

March 10, 2015

THEProjectPhaseOneScoresFor the first time this year Finlandia University is participating in THE Project, a project management competition sponsored by the Western Michigan Chapter of the Project Management Institute. The first phase was completed in late February with Finlandia scoring the second most points in its division.

“What a great experience this is for our students to be competing against other universities in a state-wide competition.” said Kevin Manninen, dean of the business school.

Each year the competition focuses on a specific problem facing the state of Michigan. The problem comes from the Governor’s office. This year’s problem that the teams will develop a project idea to solve is “Improving the Affordability of Higher Education in the state of Michigan.”

The Finlandia team was chosen in the fall of 2014 and preliminary work began at that time. Team Finlandia is made up of Micah Laban, Scott Vargas, Jordan Marr and Alex Heinonen.

The team works with 2 mentors: Mary Sullivan, an experienced professional project manager for Steelcase, and Kinga Winiarska-Buijink, who works for Cigna Healthcare as a business project manager. The team meets weekly with their mentors via teleconference and receive advice and feedback on their project plan.

The project concludes on April 13 with the students and Manninen heading to Grand Rapids for presentations. Learn more about the program by watching the video below.
