This year, Finlandia’s Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) chapter celebrates its fifth anniversary. The ALD is a National Honor Society for First-Year Success and to become a member, students must earn a 3.5 GPA or higher in their first semester at Finlandia.
“ALD, aside from being a resume line, offers competitive scholarships for graduate school and study abroad, provides opportunities for leadership on campus as well as access to leadership development through the national organization,” said Erin Barnett, Finlandia’s Dean of Students and ALD Chapter Founder. “It also helps connect high achieving first-year students with others who have similar academic interests and goals.”
Since 2015, 62 Finlandia students have been inducted into the National ALD.
“The benefits of becoming an ALD member are that you get to meet and get closer with new people. We usually get together, check in with everyone, and plan events for other students to attend as well. ALD also comes with the benefit of being qualified for more outside scholarships. Not only does this committee look great on a resume, but it’s a way to celebrate your achievements,” said Malone Hiebert, a Finlandia nursing student, and ALD member.
The ALD also volunteers around the community, helping to improve our beautiful campus and community.
“The organization has taken on different projects based upon the interests of the members,” said Barnett. “They have volunteered for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly and the Humane Society, raised money for breast cancer-related causes, marched in local parades, sponsored and cosponsored general student events, and we had students attend the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. ALD, like Finlandia, is rooted in service to others, and that spirit of giving back has been evident over the last 5 years.”
Once you are inducted into the ALD, your membership stays with you throughout your college career.
“Future members should know that it’s a great opportunity to show your leadership skills and make new friends,” said Hiebert.
The Alpha Lambda Delta’s induction ceremonies are typically held in April in the Chapel of St. Matthew, but this year, the ceremony will be held virtually.Tags: ALD, Alpha Lambda Delta, Campus News, Erin Barnett, Malone Hiebert
