The Leijona Martial Arts Club of Finlandia University hosted the first annual North Country Tournament on June 30, 2019 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. Students from Finlandia, Michigan Tech’s Husky Tae Kwon Do, Marquette Soo Bahk Do and Strong Soo Bahk Do of Crandon, Wisconsin participated. Visiting masters Master Ron Strong and Master Carl Vonck provided demonstrations and judging support, as did Finlandia’s instructors, Assistant Professor of English Carolyn Dekker and security staffer Shawn Hammond.
The Leijona Martial Arts Club will hold a belt testing on Wednesday, April 25 in Mannerheim Central from 5 to 6 p.m. Anyone who wants to support the testing candidates or see what we’re about is welcome to stop by.

Late Night Tutoring from 7 p.m. -10 p.m. in Finlandia Hall. Get prepared for finals week with TRIO and TLC Tutors. At least six professional tutors will be available to help in topics ranging from math, English, science, psychology and more!
Late Night Breakfast from 10 p.m. -11 p.m. at the Finlandia Hall Café. Free and open to all students.

Charles Patch, a sophomore Nursing student, along with his instructor, Dr. Carolyn Dekker, competed at the Soo Bahk Do regional tournament last weekend in St. Charles, Il, taking home second place trophies in forms and sparring. The Leijona Martial Arts Club at Finlandia will continue to practice through the summer and hopes to return to the tournament with a bigger contingent next spring.
