Finlandia celebrates 125th Anniversary

A semester of celebration culminated on Sunday, Dec. 5 in a full day of dance, musical performances and worship. Dozens of Finlandia University friends and family members gathered to commemorate the institution’s 125th Anniversary alongside the observance of a now 104-year-long tradition, Finnish Independence Day.

David Maki, Interim Director of the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) on Finlandia’s campus, delivered the Independence Day program’s opening remarks.

The Finnish American Folk School has released its first newsletter, your first stop on all things FAFS! Established by the Finnish American Heritage Center and led by Phyllis Fredendall and Clare Zuraw, the Finnish American Folk School exists to ensure that Finnish-American folk traditions exist for centuries to come.

Kailee Laplander presents Finlandia’s upcoming 125th Anniversary on Finlandia Fridays

This week on Finlandia Fridays, new Executive Assistant to the President, Kailee Laplander, joins the show to talk about Finlandia’s upcoming 125th Anniversary celebrations on December 3, 4 and 5. For the first time, Laplander dives into these three special days of storytelling, Folk School workshops, art, worship and musical performances. The weekend culminates on Sunday with a special edition program of Finlandia’s Annual Finnish Independence Day Observance.

Natural Dye Garden at the Finnish American Folk School

Autumn is usually the time of year when gardeners put their plots to bed for the long winter, but last month members of the Buellwood Weavers and Fiber Artists Guild gathered at the Finnish American Folk School in Hancock, Michigan to break ground on a natural dye garden.

Finnish American Heritage Center reopening June 1

The Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) will reopen to the general public on June 1, 2021 under the following guidelines:

Public hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday The Finlandia University Gallery and Martha Wiljanen Community Hall will be open and accessible for self-guided tours; guided art gallery tours provided by Gallery Director Carrie Flaspohler are available upon request The archive will be 100-percent appointment-only; masks will be required when inside archive reading room and other research areas The FAR [...]

Festival Ruska bringing colorful Nordic culture to Copper Country

Finnish band to spice up Juhannus

Finland’s “spice girls” are bringing added flavor to the Copper Country this summer.

The Finnish folk band Jepokryddona (“Spice of Jeppo”) will headline the area’s 2018 Juhannus celebration, performing the upbeat, lively tunes that represent the heritage of their part of Finland, and offer workshops in their region’s music tradition.
