Finlandia community invited to volunteer at 2022 Canal Run

The 2022 Canal Run, set for July 16, is under a week away! Volunteers are still needed and Finlandia students, employees and alumni are all invited to lend a helping hand. Whether you are looking to patrol the finish line, guide participants or even assist at the various water stops, your help is appreciated. Bring a group of friends or coworkers because a fun time is promised!

Foreign exchange student designs winning Parade of Nations logo

Chiara Rapacci, a 17-year-old junior at Baraga High School, won this year’s Parade of Nations logo contest. Her design will be the official logo of the 2022 Parade of Nations, printed on T-shirts, flyers and other materials.

Rapacci is an exchange student from Italy, sponsored by International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES), a nonprofit international high school student exchange program. Her logo illustrates this year’s theme: The World is One.

Students encouraged to apply for $250 textbook awards

Finlandia students who are enrolled for Fall 2022 are encouraged to apply for a $250 Alumni Board Textbook Award. The Award, given in the form of a Textbook Voucher redeemable at North Wind Books, is open to all students who meet the following criteria:

Enrolled full-time for Fall 2022 In good academic standing Degree-seeking

The free application will be open until Friday, July 22 and recipients will be notified prior to the start of the semester.

Johnson wraps up 15 years as Finlandia president

As 15 years in the president’s office at Finlandia University draw to a close, Dr. Philip Johnson will remember most the times his job took him elsewhere on campus.

Finlandia Alumni Board raises $10,000 for student textbooks

On June 14, alumni, friends and family of Finlandia University joined together in support of Giving Day 2022 in an effort to raise money for student textbooks. Determined to find a way to give back to students, Finlandia’s Alumni Board (FAB) started Giving Day in 2019 and has since raised more than $60,000 in its efforts.

Parade of Nations announced for September 17

The Parade of Nations has chosen a theme for its 2022 event that is extremely appropriate for the times we live in: The World is One

This year’s Parade of Nations will take place on September 17. International food returns this year, with international student organizations offering the cuisine of their countries. Food will be available for take-out only, at the Dee Stadium in Houghton.

The Parade of Nations is an annual celebration of the multiculturalism of our community.

In 1922, Martti Nisonen began his career at Suomi College, now Finlandia University, quickly gaining popularity as a profound teacher of music and prolific composer. Before his passing in 1946, Nisonen amassed more than 10 linear feet of compositions and arrangements now safely stored at Finlandia’s Finnish American Heritage Center and Historical Archive.

17 receive Hancock Promise for Fall 2022

At Hancock Central High School’s Senior Awards Night on May 17, Finlandia’s Education Partner Manager and Dual Enrollment Advisor Lauren Huested proudly presented 18 students with awards and scholarships to attend FinnU in Fall 2022. Jaidyn Laroe was the sole recipient of the free full tuition Rise Together Scholarship and 17 received the Hancock Promise.
