As was done in August, we will again conduct baseline testing for our campus community prior to beginning face-to-face classes. Whether you left the Hancock-Houghton area over winter break or remained local, all students and employees who will be physically on campus are expected to participate in our free return-to-campus COVID-19 baseline testing. Testing will take place in the Finnish American Heritage Center, as it did in August. Enter the building in the back and follow the signs. When in the FAHC/Bookstore parking lot and facing the North Wind Books, the back entrance is to your left and around the bend. You will exit the building from the front.
Returning student athletes have begun their baseline testing (Jan 8th and Jan 11th). The general student population, faculty, and staff will test according to the following schedule:
Thursday 1/14: 1:00pm-4pm
Friday 1/15: 9am-12pm
Tuesday 1/19: 1pm-4pm
Wednesday 1/20: 9am-12pm
Exemptions to testing are few, and include:
Please schedule your free COVID-19 Test by clicking here.
After the test is completed, you’ll be asked to quarantine in your home or campus residence until the results have been processed, which should take no more than 72 hours.
In order to receive your results, all students are asked to create a Healow Account with Upper Great Lakes. This account will also be used should you take advantage of the Finlandia Health Clinic services later, or need an additional test throughout the semester.
After receiving a COVID-19 test through UGL, you will receive one of three results:
A testing technique—also referred to as pool testing, pooled testing, or batch testing—that allows for more people to be tested quickly using fewer resources. During baseline testing samples will be pooled in groups of five. The COVID-19 lab will take a portion from each of the five samples, combine them to create a pool, and run one diagnostic test on the pool.
If COVID-19 is detected in your pool, it means that at least one individual in the pool may be infected, and each sample will then be tested again individually. If COVID-19 is not detected in your pool, no further action will be taken, and your test results will be reported as completed.
Detected means that COVID-19 was present in your individual sample. Students, please notify the Erin Barnett, the Dean of Students, with your result. Employees please notify Karin Van Dyke.
Testing
Where can I get a COVID-19 test on campus? Baseline testing will occur at the Finnish American Heritage Center prior to the start of classes. Symptomatic testing will take place at the Finlandia Health Clinic by appointment.
Do I have to quarantine while waiting for results? Yes. Please quarantine from others and do not report to class until you receive your results. Coordinate with professors directly to learn what options are available to you in the event you miss class.
How long will it take to get my results? Results should come back within 72 hours.
Where will I be able to see my results? You can see your results in your Healow Account with Upper Great Lakes. You can follow these steps to see your results within your account.
Quarantining & Self Isolation
Who should quarantine? Individuals who have been exposed to someone who is ill (awaiting COVID-19 test results) or individuals who have been exposed to someone with a known case of COVID-19.
Who should isolate? Individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have symptoms of COVID-19 and are awaiting test results.
What is the difference between quarantine and isolation?
Isolation separates sick people from people who are not sick. People in isolation should avoid frequenting shared spaces in their homes and wear a mask when they leave their room. If possible, people in isolation should have a private bathroom.
Quarantine restricts the movement of individuals who may have been exposed to illness. When in quarantine, a person is expected to stay home and monitor symptoms, but should be safe to interact with others in the household.
How long does a quarantine or isolation period last?
Isolation typically lasts 10 days from onset of symptoms or from the positive COVID-19 test result. A medical provider should provide an exact date at time of testing.
Quarantine is usually 14 days from the point of last exposure to someone who is symptomatic or who has tested positive for COVID-19.
I’ve tested positive for COVID-19 or been exposed to someone who tested positive and now have to quarantine. What do I do now? Work directly with your professors and the Dean of Students to determine your next steps as it pertains to your coursework.
If someone in one of classes tests positive for COVID-19, will I have to quarantine too? Not necessarily. Public health professionals and contact tracers will determine your exposure risk and next steps.
Where will residential students quarantine? Finlandia has reserved rooms in Finlandia Hall, away from other students, where residential students will quarantine. Meals will be delivered to them directly from the cafeteria. For more information, please review our Residential Quarantine Policy.
Should I bring a quarantine go bag to campus? It’s probably a good idea to have a pre-packed quarantine bag in your closet. It would be much easier to ask a roommate to grab “the pink bag and my laptop” than to try to figure out what you will want for two weeks. We recommend including items such as a change of clothes, toiletries, medicines, tissues, snacks and a phone charger.
Symptoms
Do I need to complete the Daily Symptom Tracker if I’m not coming to campus? No. Off-campus students and faculty/staff members do not need to complete the Daily Symptom Tracker unless coming to campus.
If I live on campus, do I need to complete the Daily Symptom Tracker every day? We ask that you complete the Daily Symptom Tracker every day if you reside on campus.
What are the main symptoms for COVID-19? Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.
What should I do if start exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19? If you are exhibiting symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider to discuss next steps and testing options.
Contact Tracing
Who is providing contact tracing for Finlandia? The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department will be providing contact tracing. In addition, several Finlandia staff members have been trained in contact tracing.
Why is it important for me to cooperate with contact tracers? Contact tracing is part of the process of supporting patients and warning contacts of exposure in order to stop chains of transmission.
What is a close contact?
Someone who has been within six feet for a total accumulated time of 15 minutes over a span of 24 hours.
Someone who had direct physical contact with a COVID-19 case during their infectious period. This might also include sharing drinks or food utensils.
You can still be a close contact even if both parties were wearing masks, so please remember to socially distance.
What happens when you are identified as a close contact? You will need to quarantine for 14 days from the last exposure to the COVID-19 case to reduce the chance of spreading the virus to other people. A contact tracer working on behalf of the health department will contact you by phone during your quarantine period. Contact tracers will call you to find out if you develop symptoms and become a probable case.
What is the infectious period that determines the timeline for a close contact? If someone develops COVID-19 signs or symptoms, the infectious period began 48 hours prior to the onset of symptoms and lasts for 10 days after the onset of symptoms.
If the COVID-19 case is asymptomatic, then the infectious period begins 48 hours prior to the date the COVID-19 test was collected and lasts 10 days after the date of test collection. COVID-19 cases need to isolate for 10 days, be fever free for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medication and have symptoms improvement to leave isolation

This new service is complemented by Finlandia’s own nursing faculty and regional healthcare providers who offer a professional, highly trained resource for serving the health and wellness needs of our community at such a time as this.
Finlandia’s new, on-campus health center will provide the following services:
All students, faculty, and staff will be required to complete online training prior to the start of the fall semester. Training and education modules will be built using recommended tools by the American College Health Association and others. Content will include general health and safety practices including appropriate use of personal protection equipment (PPE), as well as campus-specific protocols addressing cleaning and disinfecting practices. Training and education will continue and evolve as needed throughout the semester.
Finlandia is preparing for baseline testing for all students when arriving on campus. This testing will be coordinated through Finlandia’s wellness center as part of our collaboration with Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center. More information will be provided as plans are completed.
At the start of the fall semester, all students, faculty, and staff will receive a personal monitoring and prevention kit that includes:
Finlandia has developed an automated, daily online questionnaire for daily, personal screening. All students, faculty, and staff will be required to complete this health screen each morning. Based on the answers provided to the seven questions, the tool will inform them that they are clear to attend class or report to work, stay in their room, or stay home. Human resources and student affairs offices receive notice of screening results that indicate additional attention is required.
Any student, faculty or staff member exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be required to remain in their place of residence and report to 1) to their healthcare provider; or 2) Finlandia’s health and wellness center. All faculty, staff and students will be provided a listing of contact information for local health systems, the WUP Public Health Department, and other health and wellness resources.
Isolation and quarantine protocols are being prepared for students testing positive with COVID-19.
Systems and protocols for contact tracing will be in place, facilitated by the health and wellness center in collaboration with the Western Upper Peninsula Public Health Department.
