Giving Day, Textbook Awards and More with Alumni Board President Monica Hill

On this week’s Finlandia Fridays, host Olivia Myers is joined by Alumni Board President Monica Hill. Myers and Hill discussed Homecoming, the first annual Giving Day, Textbooks Awards and more. 

Hill, a ‘76 graduate of Suomi College became the Alumni Board President in 2018. The Alumni Board is an advisory group to the university, whose mission is “the promotion of the vision, mission, goals, and programs of Finlandia University.”

Kicking the Season Off with Grace Sokolow

Finlandia Fridays is back and kicks off season 4 with new Head Women’s Soccer Coach, Grace Sokolow. Hired this past July, Sokolow talks about her move to Finlandia, her coaching background, as well as her expectations for the rest of the season.

39 Students Selected for Alumni Association Textbook Awards

The Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) has selected 39 students for its first-ever Alumni Association Textbook Awards. The award is given out in the form of a $250 textbook voucher to North Wind Books, and winners can collect their award at North Wind Books. With over 150 applicants, narrowing it down to 39 was a daunting task.

Finlandia Fridays is back with a special edition today as Olivia Myers and Devin O’Neill were introduced as cohosts of the weekly interview series. O’Neill and Myers will taking over for season four, taking turns interviewing guests.

Giving Day Brings in $8,945 for Student Textbooks

In February of 2019, the Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) determined it wanted to give back to current students in a meaningful way. The FAB, led by president Monica Hill (’76), ultimately decided to raise funds to support a Textbook Award, to be given out in the form of a gift certificate to North Wind Books to help offset the rising cost of textbooks. The best way to do this? Set up Finlandia’s first Giving Day.

Leading the Pride is back and talking with Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Brigitte LaPointe (’07). LaPointe is originally from Baraga where she grew up in the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Alumni Needed for New Alumni Advocates Program

Finlandia University Admissions and Alumni Relations is introducing a new program that will connect alumni with prospective students. The program, titled Alumni Advocates, will pair a Suomi College or Finlandia alumnus/a with a prospective student with the same academic interests.

The fourth and final session of Adulting 101 will take place April 23 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Matthew.

Third Session of Adulting 101 to Take Place on April 16

The third session of Adulting 101 will take place April 16 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.  at  the Chapel of St. Matthew.

This session will host three speakers. Accounting professor Laura Sieders will discuss the importance of budgeting and how to be a smart investor. How to navigate student loans will be presented by Director of Student Financial Services Sandy Turnquist.
