Get to know Jouhikko – the instrument people hate to love – at Juhannus

There’ll be plenty of Finnish American Folk School offerings at Juhannus this year. In addition to welcoming the Finnish band Jepokryddona, Hancock resident and stringed instrument builder Alice Margerum will lead a workshop in the construction of the Finnish instrument jouhikko.

Finnish band to spice up Juhannus

Finland’s “spice girls” are bringing added flavor to the Copper Country this summer.

The Finnish folk band Jepokryddona (“Spice of Jeppo”) will headline the area’s 2018 Juhannus celebration, performing the upbeat, lively tunes that represent the heritage of their part of Finland, and offer workshops in their region’s music tradition. Maki Library Open House during Juhannus Mid-Summer Festival

The Sulo & Aileen Maki Library at Finlandia University will be joining in the Juhannus Mid-Summer Festival activities by holding an open house beginning Wednesday, June 21 and ending on June 28. The public is welcome to come and explore the library’s collection of early 20th century Finnish postcards, vintage Finnish travel posters and a book display featuring Finnish art and design books. There will also be a book sale with new books, ex-library books, DVDs, audiobooks and more.

Mid-summer festival of Juhannus set for June 23-25

A member of the Finnish Foreign Ministry staff in Washington, D.C. has fondly remembered her visit to Michigan’s Copper Country during FinnFest USA 2013 since the moment she departed from the U.P. nearly four years ago. Heritage Center to launch Finnish American folk school

“Although our region maintains a strong ethnic pride in its Finnish roots, the loss of language and traditional arts and crafts has left many among our residents very little onto which they can attach their ethnic identity.”
