Finlandia’s campus was filled with the buzz of midwinter spirit as patrons gathered at FinnU’s Finnish American Heritage Center and North Wind Books to celebrate the return of Heikinpäivä in 2023. Following the traditional parade, festivities on campus included wife-carrying competitions, kicksleds, a costumed circle dance, and a market.

A Finnish-American Mid-Winter Festival Until February 14

Snowflake Challenge with Ginger Alberti |1:00 – 6:00 p.m. | Sew Cranky Heikinpäivä Snowflake Challenge project, for everyone, beginners too! Learn to quickly sew a pattern on a black felt square (with an antique hand crank sewing machine), which is then entered into the contest with cash and gift certificate prizes! $3 to enter. All ages. Mark Munger to visit North Wind Books January 25

On Saturday, January 25 author of “Suomalaiset“, Mark Munger will be visiting North Wind Books for a book signing and author discussion.

Munger recently released the final book in his historical trilogy, Kotimaa. In his new release, readers follow immigrant Anders Alhomaki on his journey from Finland to Minnesota in the 1890s to Finland’s Centennial Independence Day.

Finnish American Heritage Center to host Finnish fiddling workshops in January

The Community Pelimannit, a series of six Finnish fiddling workshops, will be held January 6–23, 2020, hosted by Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center.

Finn-terns Meeri Kataja and Riina Rastas talk Heikinpäivä

Dropping by the Finlandia Fridays studios this chilly week are Finnish interns Meeri Kataja and Riina Rastas. Both Kataja and Rastas are working in the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC). The FAHC brings in Finnish interns throughout the year to bring in another aspect of Finnish culture to the university and the local area.

Students and employees invited to participate in Heikinpäivä parade

All employees and students at Finlandia University are invited to join in the Heikinpäivä 2019 parade on Saturday in downtown Hancock. The parade begins at 11 a.m., and those interested in marching should plan to arrive around 10:30. The group will gather near the former Bridge School building on on Quincy Street (see map below).
