Finnish-American Church Music: How on Earth Can It Be Interesting?

In his post-doctoral research project, Dr. Samuli Korkalainen from Helsinki, Finland is focusing on Finnish-American church music from the late 19th century onwards.

He has found hymnals, spiritual songbooks, and other printed and hand-written music written, composed, and edited by Finnish immigrants in the US and Canada – as well as interesting personalities, thoughts, and ideas behind them. Finlandia to celebrate 125th Anniversary, Juhannus in June

A year of anniversary celebrations will culminate in late June at Finlandia University, as the 125-year-old institution celebrates Juhannus (Midsummer) in a one-of-a-kind experience.

HANCOCK, MI – Finlandia University Gallery will present Off the Hook, a textile exhibit by Los Angeles artist Liv Aanrud at the Finlandia University Gallery, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC), Hancock from April 28 to June 3, 2022.

Finnish American Folk School adds ceramics and music classes

The Finnish American Folk School at Finlandia University has introduced a new line-up of workshops for spring and early summer. For the first time, ceramics joins music and fiber arts on the list of learning opportunities. Folk School hosting Saturday, Jan. 29 concert & workshop

Tickets are still available for Laurel Premo’s workshop and concert this weekend, January 29th at the Finnish American Heritage Center. Premo will be teaching a Finnish tune workshop for all instruments from 2-4 p.m. and then performing a concert at 7 p.m. This workshop and concert are made possible by generous funding from the American Scandinavian Foundation.
