The revival of the Student PTA Club at Finlandia University has brought a number of charitable events to campus since its reboot last fall. Led by club advisor and PTA Instructor Sami Dowling (’10), the student organization is ramping up its efforts this semester through two fundraisers, a February can drive and a March event called Soup for Soles.

The can and bottle drive runs Feb. 14 – Feb. 18, raising money to send another local child to Bay Cliff Health Camp. The two drop-off locations are the Maki Library and the Hirvonen Hall PTA Conference Room. Flyer available here.

“We will also come do a pick up if they call and schedule a time,” Dowling said. To schedule a pop can pick-up, call or text Student PTA Club Advisor Sami Dowling at (906) 284-2814.

On March 12, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center, the Student PTA Club will be hosting Soup for Soles, a fundraiser to provide shoes to local children in need and donate proceeds to the national organization Shoes4Kids. The event will include a silent auction with crafts and services donated by local artists and businesses. Patrons can also participate in a “special raffle” by purchasing a ticket at the door or donating a new or gently used pair of shoes for children ages 13 and under. Meals will be made to-go. All campus and community members are invited to come and enjoy a savory soup lunch. Flyer available here.

“The goal of the fundraiser is to raise money to purchase shoes to donate to our local underprivileged children,” Dowling said. “Soup for Soles is the result of our desire to give back to the community we live in that support us and the charity Shoes4Kids which was created by a PTA.”
