Position Description:

The Assistant Professor of Psychology is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. The preferred area of expertise is in Social, Cognitive, Clinical, Developmental, or Personality Psychology.   The duties include teaching assignments, student advising, curriculum development, professional development and research, university service, and other duties as assigned in accordance with the faculty handbook.  Ability to develop courses for and engage first-year students is highly desirable.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A PhD in Psychology or related field is required. ABDs will be considered and are encouraged to apply.
  2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  3. Previous college-level teaching experience and a demonstrated commitment to teaching.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience with undergraduate research.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Teach courses in the Psychology major. Courses may include Introduction to Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Personality Psychology, Social Psychology, Research Methods, Statistics, History & Systems, and upper-level courses in his or her area of expertise.
  2. Advise students by providing academic guidance, support for development of professional practice skills, and other assistance.
  3. Participate in the development of academic program curricula and assessment of student learning.
  4. Perform various administrative duties as required or assigned.
  5. Assist in the development and mentorship of student research.
  6. Participate in professional development activities.
  7. Provide service to the university, including serving on university committees as assigned.
  8. Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
  9. Adhere to university policies and procedures.
  10. Work collegially and professionally with students, employees, and external constituents.
  11. Demonstrate support for and engagement with Finlandia’s strategic vision to become more fully a whole learning community accompanying the whole student toward a whole life.
  12. Perform other duties as required, as assigned by supervisor, or in accordance with the faculty handbook.
