Position Summary: 

The Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Residence Life plays an essential role in creating a sense of belonging and community, and advocating for and responding to the needs of all university students, including up to 180 residential undergraduates. The Assistant Dean provides direct supervision to the Residence Life Coordinator, Campus Safety Manager, Director of Student Engagement. This position oversees the day-to-day administrative operations of the Office of Residence Life, including housing contracts, room assignments, occupancy management of a 180-bed residential facility, room and board billing, and the training and selection processes for resident assistants (RAs). In collaboration with the VP and Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean provides leadership for the administration of the university conduct process, Clery reporting, and Title IX compliance. The Assistant Dean engages in leadership practices that are collaborative, creative, and adaptive. Additionally, the Assistant Dean provides support and services to the campus community with the understanding that the institution is committed to individual and holistic student success.

Essential Responsibilities:

Assistant Dean of Students

  1. In collaboration with the VP for Student Development & Dean of Students, provide strategic leadership to the Division of Student Development.
  2. Directly supervise the Residence Life Coordinator, Campus Safety Manager, and Director of Student Engagement.
  3. Serve as a university-level conduct hearing officer within Finlandia University’s student conduct process.

Residence Life

  1. Supervises all administrative processes, including but not limited to: contracts, room assignments, occupancy management, and the training and selection of student staff.
  2. Responds to critical incidents on campus.
  3. Provides leadership to the administration and adjudication of the Student Conduct process within Residence Life.
  4. In partnership with the Residence Life Coordinator, maintains a high visibility and engagement in the hall and with residents.
  5. Regularly assess and evaluates opportunities to implement changes/updates to systems, policies, and services.
  6. Supervises Residence Life Coordinator.
  7. Manages Residence Life budget.

Student Engagement

  1. Supervises the Director of Student Engagement and provides direction to their oversight of areas including but not limited to: Campus Events and Activities, Student Clubs and Organizations, and Student Senate.
  2. In collaboration with the Director of Student Engagement, work with campus partners to support major campus programs such as, but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, and “Sisu” First Year Experience Curriculum.
  3. Supports the Director in the development of a robust and inclusive campus events and actives calendar.
  4. In partnership with the Director, outline a structure and process for the further growth and development of student clubs and organizations,
  5. Regularly engage with the Director to provide support and guidance to the Finlandia University Student Senate.

Campus Safety

  1. Supervises the Campus Safety Manager and provides direction to their oversight of areas including but not limited to: Campus security and emergency response, Campus Safety staff hiring and training, and university Campus Safety documentation and reporting.
  2. Collaborate with the Campus Safety Manager to organize and implement the after-hours on-call emergency response rotation.
  3. Manages compliance with federal, state and local reporting requirements, including the Clery Act.
  4. Ensures accuracy of Title IX institutional data and oversees compliance with required reporting under applicable state and federal laws.
  5. Oversees the Campus Safety budget.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  2. A minimum of 5-7 years of proven effectiveness and progressive professional development in student life.
  3. Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends.
  4. Demonstrated computer and technological skills
  5. Outstanding people, presentation, and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  2. 7-10 years of proven effectiveness and progressive professional development in student life services.
  3. Demonstrated management and organizational skills.
  4. Excellent counseling, problem solving, and referral skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility to complete assigned tasks.
  6. Experience working within a diverse setting with faculty, student affairs staff, students, and family members.
