Giving Day, Textbook Awards and More with Alumni Board President Monica Hill

On this week’s Finlandia Fridays, host Olivia Myers is joined by Alumni Board President Monica Hill. Myers and Hill discussed Homecoming, the first annual Giving Day, Textbooks Awards and more. 

Hill, a ‘76 graduate of Suomi College became the Alumni Board President in 2018. The Alumni Board is an advisory group to the university, whose mission is “the promotion of the vision, mission, goals, and programs of Finlandia University.”

This year the Alumni Board raised money during Giving Day to fund the Alumni Association Textbook Awards. This year 150 students applied and the board was able to award 39 students. Next year they hope to be able to award 50. 

Myers commented on Hill speaking to students who had applied for the Textbook Award, but were not selected, and asked what advice she was giving for next year.

“Those of us on the committee want to see personal history, family information, we don’t need a whole lot of information, but I’m the first in my family to go to college, I am working three jobs, this would help me so much to be able to not worry about every dime that’s coming in for college or going out,” said Hill. 

Hill knows that this will make the Boards decision more difficult this upcoming year, but that it will be helping more students again.
