Finlandia Alumni Board raises $15,000 for student textbooks

June 24, 2021

The Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) started Giving Day in 2019 determined to give back to current students in the way of textbook awards. Recipients receive a gift certificate to North Wind Books in the amount of $250 to help offset the rising cost of textbooks. 35 students received textbook awards in 2019, with almost $9,000 raised. In 2020, Giving Day was repurposed to assist the university in its Safe Open plan, with money raised going toward baseline testing, PPE and other necessary equipment to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. Giving Day 2021 marks a special day for Finlandia students, who are once again afforded the opportunity to receive this support through textbook awards.

Led by president Monica Hill (’76), the alumni board’s selfless devotion to Finlandia’s students holds no limit, as this year’s textbook donations set a new record for textbook Giving Day. While most of the gifts received were online, others mailed in checks or even gave cash. After waiting a few days to ensure all donations made their way to us, we’re excited to announce our total raised for Giving Day 2021!

$15,000 raised by 60 total gifts.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in Textbook Giving Day. It was a huge success, surpassing our original goal!” Hill said. “We are humbled by all of you who joined with us in giving relief to those deserving students. This award may be the deciding factor that brings deserving students to study at Finlandia. On behalf of the Finlandia Alumni Board, we are grateful!”

Giving Day is a day to celebrate all things Finlandia and show the world the opportunities it affords its alumni, family and friends.

“Once again Finlandia’s friends and alumni have stepped up to the challenge! What an encouraging demonstration of generosity and commitment to our students!” Finlandia President, Dr. Philip Johnson said. “They clearly understand that access to textbooks is essential for a strong start and finish to one’s college career. I am grateful to Finlandia’s Alumni Board for recognizing this need, establishing this annual tradition, and bringing all of us together to meet and exceed this year’s goal.”

Students interested in applying for the Finlandia Alumni Association Textbook Award may do so here until August 6. All full-time, degree-seeking students in good academic standing are eligible to apply. The application is also open to incoming freshmen. Students will be notified prior to the start of classes whether they are recipients.
