Michigan Tuition Grant Reinstated, Increased by State Legislature

Students across the state of Michigan can finally breathe easier now that the Michigan Tuition Grant has been reinstated. 

Governor Whitmer signed the supplemental state budget on December 20 which included the reinstatement of the Michigan Tuition Grant. Finlandia mourns loss of former president, Robert Ubbelohde

Finlandia University is saddened to announce the passing of former university president, Robert Ubbelohde.

Ubbelohde joined Finlandia, then Suomi College, in 1988 as the Dean of Faculty. Shortly after, he was appointed to President and Professor of Philosophy until his retirement in 2007. Ubbelohde was instrumental in converting Suomi College into Finlandia University, a baccalaureate degree granting institution.

Table Tennis Tournament brings back youthful memories for President Johnson

President Philip Johnson has a long history with table tennis, as he has been playing since grade school. He grew up with four older sisters, and a ping pong table always in the basement.

“My sister, Beth, was the one closest to me in age, and the one that I played the most. She was the most competitive,” President Johnson explained. “We used to play all the time growing up.”

This week Finlandia Fridays sits down with Board of Trustees President Julie Badel. Badel was in town, from Chicago, for the annual winter Board of Trustees meeting. She explains her joy of coming to the Upper Peninsula every year as it is where her mother grew up. It is a place she has grown to love and she “never complains about coming up here. President Johnson to lead service of remembrance, grief and protest

The Finlandia University community is invited to join in a service of rememberance, grief, and protest on Thursday, June 23 at 12 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Matthew. President Philip Johnson will lead the brief service of readings and meditation.

Dr. Sarah Kemppainen is 2016 commencement speaker

Finlandia University is proud to announce that Dr. Sarah Kemppainen will be the 2016 commencement speaker. Dr. Kemppainen is currently on the Finlandia University Board of Trustees, serves as principal at Graveraet Elementary School in Marquette and assistant principal at Marquette Senior High School.
