Finlandia University’s annual Campus Read programming is back for the 2017-18 academic year, and will begin Wednesday, September 20 at 7 p.m. with author Dr. James Livingston. The entire community is invited to the event, which should feature a provocative and stimulating discussion based on his recent book, No More Work.
James Livingston started out as an economic historian writing about banking reform in the Progressive Era. His first book, which is still in print thanks to numerous financial crises, was Origins of the Federal Reserve System: Money, Class, and Corporate Capitalism, 1890-1913 (Cornell U Press, 1986). Campus Read comes to a close on Thursday, October 20 from 7-9 p.m. at the Maki Library, as Communication Professor Dr. Monique Bourdage hosts a Zine Making Night to celebrate self-expression and provide students with a platform through which to channel their voices.

Classes across campus this week are reading Danez Smith’s work in advance of Smith’s visit to campus on September 30. Smith was selected as the Campus Read author for 2016-17 because their poetry speaks so powerfully of the need for racial and social justice.

On Thursday, October 6 from 7-8 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Matthew, Criminal Justice professor Rich Gee will facilitate a Night of Learning and Action around the issue of private prisons and racial injustice. Students will hear a short presentation and then send letters to their elected officials on the issue.
This is the second event as part of Finlandia’s Campus Read 2016.
