Finlandia honors graduating Class of 2022

On Sunday, May 1, Finlandia University held its annual Spring Commencement Ceremony honoring 84 graduates in the Class of 2022. There was standing room only in the Hirvonen Hall Auditorium with more than 700 in attendance.

In his greeting, President Johnson opened with Finlandia’s Land Acknowledgment:

“Finlandia University was founded as Suomi College by Finnish Lutheran immigrants in 1896 on land ceded by the Anishnaabe people in the Treaty of 1842. We seek to honor and respect the sacred and enduring kinship [...]

Hancock Promise application deadline extended to May 1 for Hancock grads

Finlandia’s Hancock Promise deadline has been extended to May 1. This means Hancock Central High School students who are interested in attending FinnU in Fall 2022 will have additional time to start their application process.

The Hancock Promise allows for Hancock Central High School graduates to attend Finlandia University at a tuition cost of up to only $2,500 per school year. Beginning in 2009, approximately 18-26 students have taken advantage of the program annually.

Local students looking forward to next FinnU Shark Day

Taking a spin on the hit TV show “Shark Tank”, Finlandia University held its inaugural FinnU Shark Day on Wednesday, March 9 with more than 60 high school students from L’anse, Baraga Area and Calumet in attendance. Students competed for the chance to win a $2,500 scholarship in the first event of its type on Finlandia’s campus.

Finlandia University’s Student Nurses Association (FUSNA) is celebrating its 20th annual benefit for Omega House on April 2. What began in 2002 as a spaghetti dinner has become one of the most popular pancake breakfasts in the Western U.P.

Finlandia College of Health Sciences announces plans for Towsley Foundation Grant

Since 1998, the Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation has partnered with Finlandia University in providing instrumental funding toward technology and equipment. The Foundation’s most recent expression came as a five-year $220,000 grant to provide a robust, state-of-the-art healthcare education for FinnU College of Health Sciences students at their new facility.

Virtanen’s research to be featured in three PBS world premieres this weekend

On Sunday, March 13, the world premiere of three documentary films featuring the research and production-related work of Finnish & Nordic Studies Professor Hilary-Joy Virtanen will take place on PBS station WNMU-TV Marquette as part of their Festival! 22 pledge programming.
