Local students invited to Blue Carpet Days

Finlandia University is rolling out the blue carpet for prospective local students on July 26 and August 7 for Blue Carpet Days.

ISAD hosting open house and portfolio review July 31

Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design (ISAD) is hosting an open house and portfolio review day for prospective art students on July 31.

“We are dedicated to making the arts strong in the Upper Peninsula,” ISAD coordinator Gini Brewer said. “We are hosting this event to bring in prospective students and show them what we have to offer.”

North Wind Books to host Cub Club

North Wind Books is excited to bring back Cub Club for another summer. This four-part series of events will highlight unique children’s books and each feature a special guest host. Virtanen elected to Finlandia Foundation National Board of Trustees

At their March board meeting in Dallas, Finlandia Foundation National trustees elected Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen to a three-year term on the board. Virtanen, a native of nearby Toivola, is the Finnish & Nordic Studies professor at Finlandia University. She holds a Master’s and Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; an MA from Indiana University; and a BA from Michigan State University. Finlandia University is pleased to unveil the new and improved Fiber and Fashion Design program page.

The page features more visuals and less text, and is geared more toward incoming and prospective students who are looking at FinnU’s Fiber and Fashion Design program. Finlandia helping to meet growing need for nurse practitioners

Finlandia University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is helping to fill the growing demand for nurse practitioners in the workforce.

“Finlandia’s nursing program, which is an accredited bachelor’s degree nursing program, has a rigorous curriculum and large number of clinical hours that prepare our graduates for advanced degrees in nursing,” said Finlandia’s Nursing Department Chair Johnna Therrian. “For many of our students, obtaining their nurse practitioner (NP) license is their goal when they’re done.”

MEET GINA GELICHE Hometown: Union Grove, WI Major: Fiber & Fashion Design Groups: Servant Leadership House and Helsinki Slang Year: Senior When Gina Geliche started as a student at Finlandia University three years ago, she wasn’t planning on majoring in Fiber and Fashion Design.

PHOTOS: Finlandia joins Houghton County Flood recovery efforts

27 Finlandia University faculty and staff along with the entire TRIO Upward Bound class volunteered on Thursday to help with Houghton County flood relief efforts. They were sent to various locations throughout Houghton County including Ripley, Hubbell and Agate street in Houghton. Jobs ranged from mucking basements to ripping up carpet to cleaning up rubble from the streets. A full album of photos can be viewed here.

Lutheran Social Services accepting online donations for flood victims

Volunteers pulling out mud and water from a flooded basement in Ripley, one of many Houghton County communities in recovery mode.

The Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (LSS) is now accepting donations on its website for flood victims in Houghton County and surrounding areas. All funds collected will be used for direct support of affected residents for immediate supplies for survival and long term recovery. Anyone interested in donating may do so
