Taking account of the accounting program with Laura Sieders

February 8, 2019

This week on Finlandia Fridays, accounting instructor Laura Sieders stopped by to talk about the accounting degree offered here at FinnU.

Following the standard requirements to be a CPA , the courses at FinnU prepare students to go into their fifth year of accounting and to go on and take the CPA exam The small class size sets the degree program apart from larger schools. Sieders mentioned she loves getting to know her students on a first name basis. Personal interaction and years of experience, helps Seiders make her students “more marketable” to their future employers.

While working with her students, Sieders likes to bring a “work hard, play hard” mentality to her classes. Coming from her time in the field, Seiders explained that accountants have their busy season and then they have their off season. In both seasons, accountants need to be able to enjoy what they are doing and who they are working with.

Sieders states that top skill that is brought to the table with an accounting degree is analysis. Being an analyst opens many doors for accounting students. Students are able to work anywhere, as Sieders mentions, “every business needs somebody to count their money, analyze what’s happening and forecast into the future.”

“Wherever you want to go in life, accounting can take you there.”

Sieders encourages all students to take an accounting class, whether they are an art student or business student. An accounting class can assist with personal finances, or help students climb the company ladder after graduation. Sieders mentioned that her favorite people to work with were the people who had a vague idea of what she did and what she needed from them.

Originally from Calumet, Sieders received her bachelor’s in business from Michigan Tech. After Tech, Seiders moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for a law firm and several non-profit companies. A personal matter brought Sieders back home to the Keweenaw. While she enjoyed her job in the big city, Sieders mentioned that she is glad to be back home.
