Finlandia University launches new website

The Finlandia University Marketing and Communications Department is proud to announce the launch of a new website. The website went live Thursday, June 2 at finlandia.edu.

“This website is a vital investment in the future of Finlandia University,” Director of Marketing and Communications Michael H. Babcock said. “I am proud of our entire campus community for coming together to make this possible.”

Finlandia University has one dorm residency, the Finlandia Hall. Finlandia Hall aids students in receiving all their vital needs, food at the Café, sizable dorm rooms, multiple lounge areas for relaxation, computer lab and study rooms for studying that are open all hours throughout the day and night. Below are pictures of the lifestyle from Finlandia Hall such as the new coffee shop, dorm rooms, lounge area, and the Cafe.

Amazing student work from Finlandia ceramics program

Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design is renowned for its incredibly facilities, ability to bring in professional artists and focus on the Finnish model of education. It’s also quickly becoming known for having an amazing ceramics program under the lead of emerging artist Kenyon Hansen.

Suomi Roomies Reunion to take place Sept. 16-18

Finlandia University graduates from 1974 through 1978, known lovingly as the Suomi Roomies, will be on campus for the group’s second reunion September 16-18, 2016.

The event will include an on-campus banquet, catching a Finlandia Lions football game at McAfee Field, a cookout at McLain’s State Park, campus tours and meals, and more!

Registration is now open for the Suomi Roomies reunion at finlandia.edu/reunion.

Keweenaw Bike to Work Day is Friday

Everyone is invited to participate in the eighth annual Keweenaw Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20. The event will be held on National Bike to Work Day, and is coordinated locally by Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE!) in an effort to raise awareness of bicycle commuting as a transportation alternative, bike safety, and the importance of sharing the road.

Climbing the six major barriers to academic success

Summer Bridge Program to aid student growth and success

Meant to “bridge” the gap between high school and college, pre-college summer programs, or bridge programs, (like Finlandia’s recently announced Summer Bridge Program) have been shown to increase the academic, personal, and social development of underprepared, minority and low-income students and prepare them for their first year of college.

The research consistently shows that some of the major barriers to college success include:

Hancock 2016 Construction Project starts May 2

Construction starts Monday, to last into early fall

PROJECT: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing about a mile of US-41 in Hancock from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Lincoln Drive. Work includes removing and replacing the existing roadway, with drainage improvements. Streetscape work includes decorative street lighting, curb bump-outs and landscape plantings. The City of Hancock will be performing water main and sanitary sewer improvements in addition to MDOT’s project.

Summer Bridge Program designed to improve academic success

Last week Finlandia University introduced the Summer Bridge Program. This type of program is trending in higher education right now, and it’s clear why: Bridge programs can help ease students’ transition to university life and improve their academic performance and success rates.

Missouri college names Klaver president

Finlandia University Vice President for Institutional Advancement Lenny Klaver has accepted the position of President at North Central Missouri College in Trenton, Missouri. He will begin in his new role Monday, May 16.
