Personal Statement
Students who major in biology at Finlandia study and work, not only in the classroom, but also in the laboratory and field. During the fall semesters, my students and I are often out of doors doing field work. We visit local streams in search of aquatic insect habitat and explore forests and fields, while hunting down and identifying insects, woody plants, and mushrooms.
When not working with students at Finlandia, I have spent much of my time as a limnologist, studying the Great Lakes. My research is focused on Lake Superior, primarily, and to a lesser extent the lower Great Lakes. I study these lakes from the vantage point of space, using satellite remote sensing to examine lake temperatures and productivity.
