Lincoln now serving as Academic Coach/Personal Counselor at Finlandia University

August 24, 2017

With the new school year comes a new face in Finlandia’s Nikander Hall as Zoe Lincoln has been introduced as an Academic Coach/Personal Counselor in TRIO Student Support Services.

“Our students will love Zoe,” Director of TRIO SSS Cindy Cowell said. “With a degree in counseling, plus a love of leading co-curricular trips with students, she will be a great resource for our students. We will rely on both her positive energy and expertise in supporting students as they navigate the sometimes stressful landscape of being a college student.”

Lincoln has a Masters in Counseling from Central Michigan University and a Bachelors in Recreation Management from Western Michigan University. The Fremont, Michigan native previously worked in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula for the National Park Service, a position that helped her fall in love with the region.

“I feel lucky to be in this situation,” Lincoln said. “I love spending as much of my free time as possible outside. That includes hiking, spending time with my dog, exploring and camping in the Keweenaw. Plus, I was familiar with Finlandia, and it seems like a place full of energy.”

TRIO Student Support Services serves a defined population on campus as they work with students from moderate income families, those who are the first generation in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, or students who possess a learning or physical disability.

“Prior to starting this job, I didn’t know a lot about TRIO, but hearing about the population I would work with I got so excited,” Lincoln said, mentioning Project SISU, a project she did with local middle school students while at the park service. “We helped them get involved in their community by volunteering and took them camping so they could explore the beautiful place that they live in. The whole idea was to help them build pride in their community.”

Lincoln has been appointed to the position left by longtime employee Jerry Hess, who retired in May. Lincoln can be reached at (906) 487-7353 or zoe.lincoln@finlandia.edu.
