It’s On Us Week of Action with Erin Barnett on Finlandia Fridays

September 29, 2017

This week Finlandia Fridays was visited by Dean of Students Erin Barnett to promote the campus wide It’s On Us campaign. It’s On Us is a national campaign that was started by former Vice President Joe Biden that raises awareness for sexual assault. Finlandia was awarded a grant from the Michigan State Police to advocate the campaign. The grant has allowed Finlandia to hire intern Abigail Tembreull to organize the campaign, and to schedule several events that will promote the campaign on campus.

Week of Action

The Week of Action will start this week with a film on Monday night hosted by student Senate. In addition to all campus events, Dial Help will be on campus to offer support and information to students.Dean of Students Erin Barnett

The Hunting Ground

The film being viewed is The Hunting Ground, a documentary that focuses on sexual assault on college campuses around the country. After the film, students will have the chance to participate in a discussion spearheaded by Finlandia’s own Dr. Claudia Youakim.

Walk a Mile in THEIR Shoes

The next event will be on Wednesday, starting at Quincy Green and it is Walk a Mile in THEIR shoes hosted by the Men of Strength club. Walk a Mile was started by a young group of men who would walk a mile in women’s high heels to raise awareness for sexual assault. Finlanida is walking a mile in THEIR shoes, to open the support to all victims of sexual assault, not just women.

Clothesline Project

On Thursday, the Young Women’s Caucus for Art will be hosting the Clothesline Project. The Clothesline Project is another national project where sexual assault survivors discuss their stories and/or offer encouragement on pieces of clothing. The exhibition will start at 12:30 p.m. in the Reflection’s Gallery located in the Jutila Center.

Teal Takeover

Finally, the last event for the week of action will take place on Saturday at the Lions home football game. Students will be hosting a teal takeover to show support for sexual assault awareness. All attendees are encouraged to wear teal. Booths will also be set up with teal hair spray and nail polish to show support.

Other It’s On Us events

Outside of the week of action, Finlandia’s Servant Leadership House will host two speakers in November, who will also discuss the topic of sexual assault. Kelly Tsai is a spoken word poet who speaks about topics that many people are not always comfortable hearing. Her talk will take place in the Finnish American Heritage Center on November 9 at 8 p.m. The following week, director Emily Lindin will be on campus to promote her documentary The Unslut Project, which is based on her experiences with sexual assault. Lindin’s film will be shown on November 14 at 7 p.m.
