The Seaton Center for Vocation & Career is officially open

February 19, 2021

It’s a moment campus has been waiting for since the news originally broke in 2019. The Seaton Center for Vocation & Career is officially open and housed in Nikander 15. While there are still some furniture pieces coming in and decorating to be completed, the CVC is now offering services and appointment to students.

Director of Career Services Emma Dorst stopped by Finlandia Fridays to talk about the official launch of the CVC, what services students can take advantage of, and why the CVC is undertaking a strengths-based approach that combines vocation and career.

“We offer a lot of the traditional support  services you might imagine,” said Dorst. “We help students develop resumes, cover letters, job applications and we also have a designated space for conducting mock interviews, but we also focus a lot on integrating a sense of vocation into career exploration. So we help students understand their strengths, how they interact with people, how they want to be interactive in the world, and how that aligns to potential career fields they’d like to explore.”

All new incoming students will interact with the CVC through the CliftonStrengths assessment they’ll undergo with the Director of Vocation, Dr. René Johnson. For her line of work, Dorst looks forward to regularly helping students in their career search, which she said can include internships, study abroad programs, service opportunities such as Americorps, full-time jobs or even graduate school.

The CVC was made possible through a NetVUE Vocation across the Academy Grant from the Council of Independent Colleges. To learn more about the CVC and to schedule an appointment with Dr. Johnson or Emma Dorst, please visit finlandia.edu/cvc.
