On July 16, President Tim Pinnow joined Finlandia University faculty, staff, and even Riku the Lion, for a day of volunteering at the 47th Annual Canal Run. FinnU volunteers helped out by assisting at the various water stops, handing out awards at the finish line and guiding participants.

The 2022 Canal Run, set for July 16, is under a week away! Volunteers are still needed and Finlandia students, employees and alumni are all invited to lend a helping hand. Whether you are looking to patrol the finish line, guide participants or even assist at the various water stops, your help is appreciated. Sawadogo joins Copper Country Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors

Finlandia University is pleased to announce Annette Sawadogo’s recent election to the Copper Country Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. Sawadogo, Finlandia’s Assistant Dean of Students for Residence Life & Campus Safety, started her six-year term in January.

MLK Day of Service postponed

MLK Day of Service at Finlandia University is a day to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. through community service and volunteering. This year, out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19, MLK Day activities originally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 have been postponed. Martin Luther King Day will still be a day of observance and classes will be suspended for the day.

Nick Kwiek, Career Coach with TRIO Student Support Services at Finlandia University, joined Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about the Parade of Nations, a multicultural festival celebrated in the cities of Hancock and Houghton. Kwiek talks about the change in programming and route of this year’s parade and shares information on how students, employees and community members can get involved. Parade of Nations Scavenger Hunt registration deadline August 23

The Parade of Nations will be held on Saturday, September 18, beginning from Quincy Green at 11 a.m. and ending near the Chamber of Commerce in Houghton. This year, the Parade of Nations community-wide event will include a parade of participants, floats and flags from around the world. Although there will not be a Multicultural Festival this year, PON is hosting its first ever Scavenger Hunt and they are seeking volunteers from Finlandia’s community! Student Volunteers Needed to Help Build Hancock Playground

The City of Hancock is looking for student volunteers to help build a playground at the Little League Field located in the Driving Park behind the Houghton County Arena. Shifts last three hours, and the the City is hoping for six volunteers on Friday, August 23 from 8am-4:30pm and Saturday, August 24 from 8am to completion.

Feeding America West Michigan and Finlandia University to Host Mobile Food Pantry on October 10

On October 10, Feeding America West Michigan,in partnership with Finlandia University, will provide a food distribution to people in need at Baraga Area High School. The distribution will take place at 4:30 p.m.

NOTE: The event has been moved inside to the small gym. Volunteers will enter the school by the flag pole. Those coming to get food should follow volunteer instruction upon arriving at the school.

Students: CopperDog 150 needs you (and you need CopperDog)

The CopperDog 150 is a three-stage competitive sled dog race that travels all across the Keweenaw Peninsula. This year the race runs March 2-4, with stops in Calumet, Eagle harbor and Copper Harbor. The CopperDog has built a fantastic reputation in mushing community, based largely in the volunteers that turn out in droves to keep them safe and make them feel welcome.
