Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Fund reaches 70 percent of goal

More than $7,000 raised from friends, teammates and family

Midway through July friends and family of the late Shawn Wickersheim came together to honor his memory with the creation of the Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Fund. Now, after just over four weeks of seeking donations, the fund is over 70 percent toward its goal of $10,000.

“The support we’ve seen from Wick’s former teammates, friends and family has been incredible,” said Tucker Thoreson, a good friend and former teammate of Shawn’s who is handling many of the logistics of the fund. “I’ve spoken to dozens of our former friends and teammates, many of which have proudly donated to the cause.”

The memorial fund is being used to create the Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Student Lounge in the bottom floor of Finlandia University’s Paavo Nurmi Center. Wickersheim was a three-sport athlete during his time at Finlandia, including a four-year letter winner playing for the Lions basketball and baseball teams.

The lounge will be dedicated on Saturday, September 3 prior to the Finlandia football team’s home opener.
