June 19, 2017

Highly educated and experienced physical therapist comes to Hancock from Newberry

Finlandia University’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program is now being led by experienced physical therapist Pam Brown, PT, MPT, CIMT. Brown, who is serving as PTA Program Director & Assistant Professor, began at the university in May and will begin teaching courses during the fall semester.

“We are excited to have Pam on our PTA team. Her combination of education, clinical and leadership experience will serve the students, program and faculty well,” Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Fredi de Yampert said. “Her commitment to excellence will lead our highly reputable, professionally accredited PTA program well into the future.”

About Pam Brown

Brown is coming to Hancock after more than 20 years at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, located in Newberry in the eastern portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Since 2003 she has served as the Director of Rehab Services at the hospital.

“The opportunity at Finlandia is one I couldn’t pass up,” Brown said. “I love teaching and being able to continue in a profession that I love. Working in physical therapy means I get to see some absolutely incredible success stories, and I’ve seen so many of them over the past 20 years.”

Brown earned her master’s degree from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania after earning a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. While at the hospital in Newberry she played key roles all rehab services, advancing and improving long-term care, implementing and updating technology, and continuing education opportunities for employees. The wide variety of experiences are part of life in rural healthcare, and it’s something she’s excited to instill in her students.

“Providers of healthcare in rural areas experience such a richness in their practice,” she said. “In a community hospital, similar to the ones that many of Finlandia’s students will end up practicing, you get to realize the beauty of being a jack of all trades. You learn how to handle every kind of injury.”
