Give Drugs the Boot was a hit in first year at FinnU

April 24, 2017

Give Drugs the Boot was hosted this weekend at Finlandia University. The event kicked off with a very moving talk from Mrs. Brusso. She shared the story of how her daughter suffered the loss of her father and turned to heroin as a coping technique. Despite various attempts to get treatment for her addiction, Jamie Brusso overdosed on heroin in her apartment. Her story clearly made a deep impact on the crowd as there was complete silence the entire time she was talking.

Dial Help representative, Kevin Weir, finished the opening statements with quick tips on prevention and local resources for those in need of help. Weir stayed the duration of the event, handing out pamphlets, cards, and flyers for upcoming events and tips for staying drug-free.

The games commenced with eight teams of seven players registered for our round robin style tournament. Phil Milbrath, Assistant Athletic Director, set up the tournament schedule, kept score and refereed the tournament. Milbrath’s passion for athletics and excellent leadership skills made him a huge asset to the success of this tournament. Assistant Hockey Coach, Ross Rinkinen, was also active in the operations of the tournament. Rinkinen assisted in securing a Thrivent Action Teams grant from Thrivent Financial, allowing the event to receive 25 t-shirts, $250 for supplies and banners.

The eight teams were composed of students from all over the community. Team Talent, one of our youngest teams (age 10-11), made it into the semi-finals before suffering a loss that dismissed them from the championship games. The championship games went into overtime to make it an exciting finale for both the semifinals and finals. The true champions are each and every participant, sponsors, leader, and supporting member who took the time to make this drug free community event happen.

Event organizers extend their sincere thanks to Thrivent Financial, Dial Help, Tony’s Country Kitchen, Porkka Farm, Michigan Tech Hockey, Finlandia University, and the Calumet S.A.D.D Chapter.
