Dr. Emily Geiger joins science department at Finlandia

July 13, 2016

Finlandia University has hired Dr. Emily Geiger as Assistant Professor of Biochemistry.

“I’m excited to be part of the science department at Finlandia,” Dr. Geiger said. “I appreciate the small class sizes, which contribute to a great learning environment.”

Dr. Geiger began teaching as an adjunct at FinnU in the spring semester. She will lead courses in general chemistry and organic chemistry, as well as the associated labs this fall. The offering of organic chemistry courses is new at the university.

“I am excited to have Emily joining us at Finlandia,” said Dr. Jason Oyadomari, Associate Professor of Biology and Interim Dean of Suomi College of Arts and Sciences. “Her wealth of experience and passion for teaching will strengthen our biology program.”

Dr. Geiger is an alum of Michigan Technological University where she earned her bachelor’s degree and PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry. She taught lab sections at the school for five years, including microbiology, anatomy, physiology, biology and environmental microbiology.

While in school she earned many recognitions, including three-time Top 10 Percent Teaching – University Wide, College of Science and Art’s Outstanding Teacher Award in 2014 and Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award in 2013.

Outside of academics, Dr. Geiger is well known in the craft beer community for her business Craft Cultures Yeast Labs, which cultures and propagates yeast in Finlandia University’s Jutila Center. Learn more about her business at craftcultures.com.
