Claudia Youakim and Hailee Johnson outline SCAS Capstone Presentations

This week on Finlandia Fridays, professor Dr. Claudia Youakim and senior sociology major Hailee Johnson join the program to touch on a very compelling capstone project through the Suomi College of Arts & Sciences (SCAS). SCAS Capstones are projects completed and presented upon by students here at Finlandia University. Until now these have been closed to the public, but Finlandia is opening its doors and welcoming anyone to come for the presentations.

Johnson’s sociology capstone focuses on attitudes towards interracial marriage and dating with millennials in Houghton County. To prepare Johnson created a survey with open- and close-ended questions to learn more about how millennials in Houghton County felt. This topic really struck home for Johnson, being in an interracial relationship herself it greatly factored into her deciding to do this project.

It is important to note that this is not a representative sample. Only 10 people were interviewed, but it did give Johnson an idea on how people felt. She learned to be unbiased and accept opinions that may differ from her own.

Johnson will be one of more than a dozen presenters. Presentations will be held next Thursday, April 27 from 1-4 PM and the following Friday from 9-11 AM. “This is an exciting opportunity for seniors to showcase their work,” said Youakim.
